Wells grinds out win over Yarmouth, advances to state finals

AUGUSTA — After falling to Yarmouth twice during the regular season, the No. 3 Wells basketball team pushed past the top-seeded Clippers 41-38 in the Class B South finals on Saturday.

Unlike previous matchups, the Warriors would get off to a fast start against Yarmouth and took a 23-14 lead into the halftime break.

The Clippers would battle back in the third quarter though, and managed to tie the score 27-27 heading into the fourth.

The two clubs would battle in a back-and-forth eight minutes, however the Warriors would hit key free throws to secure the win and clinch a state championship game berth.

Many of the Warriors also play football for the 2016 Class C Champs, and hope to carry that experience into the finals as the Warriors haven’t reach the title game in over a decade.

Deandre Woods led Wells with 16 points while Cameron Cousins added 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Cousins also won the Pierre Harnois Award for outstanding play and sportsmanship.

The Warriors will take on Mount Desert Island at the Augusta Civic Center on Friday at 7:45.
