Sanford crowns two champs at Westbrook tourney

WESTBROOK —  A pair of local wrestlers started the 2017-18 wrestling season with a championship on Saturday as Sanford’s Sam Anderson and Sol Demers each brought home gold from the Westbrook Invitational.

Anderson, who won a state title last year, opened up his senior campaign with an impressive run at Westbrook — capped off by a 17-10 win over Marshwood’s Dylan Strong in the 170-pound finals.

Demers started his sophomore season with a championship, which he won with a pin in just 40 seconds of Scarborough’s Anthony Purvis at 220 pounds.

The Spartans finished in a tie for fifth place with Scarborough in the team standings. Marshwood won the team crown with 139 points. Cony was second with Skowhegan third and Mt. Ararat/Brunswick fourth. Biddeford finished in 11th place in the 15-team field.

Sanford got a third-place finish from Nick Works at 285 pounds, and Adam Genereux finished in fourth place at 106 pounds.

Biddeford was led by Josiah Garcia’s second-place finish. The standout would drop an 11-1 major decision to Marshwood’s David Spinney in the 145-pound final.

The Tigers would also get third-place finishes from Peyton Bissonnette at 120 pounds and Devon Whitmore at 138 pounds.

Marshwood had four wrestlers bring home titles as Carsen Goodwin (120), Liam Coomey (126), Matt Thompson (132) and Spinney all earned the top spot on the podium. The Hawks also got second-place finishes from Sean Moriarty (113), Strong and James Thompson (195).

Cony would get first-place finishes from Noah Dumas (113) and Nic Mills (195). Skowhegan’s Jake Craig (106) and Samson Sirois (138) also captured gold.

Scarborough also had a pair of champions as senior Jeremy Sendrowski won a title at 152 pounds and Lincoln Andrews earned gold at 285 pounds.

The other champions on Saturday were Morse/Wiscasset’s Sam Strozier at 160 pounds and Messalonskee’s Austin Pelletier at 182 pounds.
