Local students earn Public Relations Council scholarships

PORTLAND — The Maine Public Relations Council, the state’s professional association of public relations practitioners, announced Kaleigh Haroldsen of Kennebunk and Laura Nicolo of Lebanon as recipients of The Arthur Marcoux Scholarship and The Maine Public Relations Council Scholarship, respectively, at their annual meeting.

A junior at the University of Maine with a double major in Business Marketing and Psychology, Haroldsen contributes to community service projects through the student volunteer organization, the Maine Business School Corps.

From cooking meals for the families of sick children at the Ronald McDonald house to planning and implementing a Nets4Pets4Vets fundraiser to provide therapy pets to Veterans struggling with PTSD, she emerged as the ideal candidate for the inaugural year of a scholarship named in memory of Arthur Marcoux. After college, Kaleigh looks forward to a career of helping others.

A junior Marketing major at the University of Maine, Nicolo pursues how marketing and communications can help underrepresented and struggling businesses thrive in the global economy.

She currently serves as the Communications Director for Scratchpad Accelerator, a program that helps women-owned businesses grow and prepare to raise outside equity through mentorship. This, as well as her marketing internship on educational and policy driven aspects of financial inclusion in developing countries at Tufts University’s Fletcher Leadership Program for Financial Inclusion, made her an ideal candidate for the Maine Public Relations Council Scholarship.

College students attending an accredited Maine college or university and majoring in public relations, broadcasting, journalism, marketing or advertising are eligible to apply for the annual scholarships awarded by Maine Public Relations Council. A panel of judges review applicants based upon their GPA, essay, letters of recommendations, and relevant experience.

Chartered in 1975, the Maine Public Relations Council is a dynamic community of PR, Marketing, and Communication Professionals, dedicated to providing relevant professional development resources and support to generate greater awareness of the role of public relations.

MPRC's membership includes individuals who have some current professional PR, Marketing, and Communication responsibility (or are retired professionals) and reside in or have business affairs in Maine, as well as students pursuing careers related to PR, Marketing, and Communication.
