OLD ORCHARD BEACH — National discount store chain Dollar General is contemplating a store on Heath Street in Old Orchard Beach.

Town Manager Larry Mead said at Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting that the Design Review Committee will will discuss a proposed plan for a new building that would house a Dollar General store at the corner of Heath Street and Saco Avenue.

Mead said that the existing building on the property was declared an unsafe structure well over a year ago and the proposed project would make a significant improvement to a “kind of blighted area.”

Dollar General spokeswoman Mary Kathryn Colbert said in an email on Thursday that the company was currently in the “due diligence phase” for a new Dollar General store in Old Orchard Beach.

“This means we are reviewing the opportunity to add a new store in the area, but we have not committed to doing so just yet,” she said. “Based on our current timeline, we anticipate to have a final decision on this by mid-spring.”

The Dunham Group has listed 19 Heath St., located at the corner of Heath Street and Saco Avenue, for $625,000. The property is nearly an acre in size and has a 3,400-square-foot former car maintenance building, which the listing describes as “most likely a tear down.”

The proposed location is down the street from national discount store Family Dollar, which is located at 8 Heath St.
